The Sonoita Creek is about 50 km long river in southern Arizona . His name he was given by the now abandoned Pima - Mission near the plateau of Sonoita , a town in Santa Cruz County .
The first 15 miles the Sonoita Creek flows steadily westwards, then it crosses Patagonia , where it is dammed up to Patagonia Lake . From then on, it runs about 12 kilometers underground before it flows into the Santa Cruz River a few kilometers north of Nogales . This confluence supplies the towns of Tumacacori-Carmen and Tubac with water and collects in the north in the marshland near San Xavier del Bac . The course is limited to the north by the Santa Rita Mountains and to the south by the Patagonia Mountains .
On November 17, 1856, the United States founded Fort Buchanan on the banks of Sonoita Creek in order to better control the areas acquired through the Gadsden purchase .
In the 1890s , several stone artifacts were discovered a few meters below the surface near the river source .
