The Mission San Xavier del Bac is an old Spanish mission church and is located 10 miles south of Tucson , Arizona . It is also known as the White Dove of the Desert .

history

Around 1700 a missionary station was established in the land of the Tohono O'Odham Indians by the missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino , a priest of the Jesuits . The present-day church was built on this site by the Indians in 1797, and its unique altarpiece and impressive wall paintings make it a popular destination for tourists as well as local believers today.

The building was recognized as a National Historic Landmark on October 9, 1960 . Since October 15, 1966, it has also been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Arizona .

After the church was repaired with normal building materials in the 1980s, water collected in the walls and partially destroyed the wall painting . As a result, the entire new material was removed in a complex process and the church was restored over several years by international specialists using the historically traditional original materials. What was also new in this process was that Indian artists were incorporated who, after the experts had left, took over their work and now in turn spread the expertise in similar restorations.

tourism

The church is only closed on Sundays due to the regular services, on all other days it is accessible free of charge.
