The season 1965/66 of the ice hockey league was the eighth season of the league as the second highest German ice hockey division under the Bundesliga . The championship was decided by a playoff between the first two with equal points, with the Berlin ice skating club prevailing against EV Landsberg . Berlin rose directly to the top division and was replaced by the Bundesliga relegated VfL Bad Nauheim .
With the withdrawal of Bundesliga relegated TuS Eintracht Dortmund , the league only played with eleven teams. The last one, Eintracht Frankfurt , was able to defend the class in the relegation game against the second in the regional league , the Cologne EK .

As in previous years, the participating teams played a single round, so that each club played a home and an away game against the other teams. The first place went straight to the Bundesliga at the end of the season . The last placed, however, had to play in a relegation round against the champions Regionalliga for his place in the upper league.
