The Munich Ice Skating Club from 1883 ( Munich EV for short ) is an ice sports club from Munich . After the Augsburg Ice Skating Club and the Hamburg Ice Skating Club, it is the third oldest still existing ice sports club in Germany . Today the club only maintains the figure skating / ice dancing and speed skating / short track departments . Several Olympic and world champions in figure skating and speed skating come from the club. The club also became known through its former ice hockey department, whose greatest successes were third places at the German championships in 1925 and 1932, and the curling department, which was German champion six times.

founding

The founder of the Münchener EV was a group of Munich rowers who were looking for a recreational sport for the winter. The association was founded on December 3, 1883 in Cafe Heck at the Maxmonument .

After the Frankfurt Ice Skating Club in 1861, the Altona Ice Skating Club in 1876 and the Hamburg Ice Skating Club (now the Hamburg Ice Skating Club) in 1881, the MEV was the fourth ice sports club founded in Germany. In the 1880s, the MEV helped found the German Ice Sports Association (DEV) and the International Ice Skating Union (IEU).

In addition to the figure skating and speed skating departments that still exist today, there were also departments for ice hockey, curling and roller sports . The club has received several awards for its youth work, including the sports badge of the Federal President and the Green Ribbon for exemplary promotion of talent in the club .

Curling

The men's team in the curling department was German champions six times between 1966 and 1993 , the last championship in a syndicate with EC Oberstdorf . The department was closed due to a lack of training opportunities in Munich.

ice Hockey

As early as the beginning of the 20th century, MEV ice hockey was played according to Canadian rules, that is, with a puck instead of a ball. MEV won the club's first known game with 15: 6 against an EV from Innsbruck. In 1913 they took part for the first time in the South German preliminary round of the second German championship , where they lost 0:29 to local rivals MTV Munich .

After the end of the First World War , they took part in the German championships several times. It achieved third place in 1925 and 1932; however, only three teams competed in both tournaments. In 1926 and 1927 you failed in the preliminary round.

After the Second World War , the MEV took part in gaming again. Already in the 1946/47 season they took part in the Bavarian championship. In 1948/49 the MEV took part in the district league. From around 1960 the MEV was the only ice hockey club in Munich. As a result, the Bavarian State League Championship was secured in 1962/63 and was promoted to the group league . In the group league season 1963/64 they reached the championship again and rose to the second-rate league. The 1964/65 season ended in 3rd place. In the summer of 1965 there were negotiations to join MEV to FC Bayern Munich , but these failed. The ice hockey department was transferred to Bayern Munich on January 7, 1966 . The 1965/66 season ended in third place under the name FC Bayern Munich. The team even rose to the Bundesliga in 1967 and played there for two years before the division was dissolved.

After the ice hockey department of FC Bayern was dissolved, it was re-established at MEV. After taking part in the Bavarian League in 1971/72 , in 1972 they were promoted to the third-class Regionalliga Süd . After the 1972/73 season , which they finished 3rd, they moved up to what is now the third-class Oberliga Süd through the establishment of the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga . The 1973/74 season was finished in 13th and last place, but remained in the league due to the withdrawal of competitors. In the 1974/75 season they improved to 9th place, in the 1975/76 season even to 5th place. In September 1976, the ice hockey department finally joined the EHC 70 Munich, also playing in the major league . This rose in the same year by increasing the 2nd Bundesliga in this and played 1980/81 in the Bundesliga.
