On June 29, 1879, the four gymnasts Franz-Paul Lang, Ferdinand Dix, Josef Hailer and Max Meisinger founded the club. The founders were previously members of the Munich gymnastics and sports club , which later became the TSV 1860 Munich club. In August 1879 the MTV became a member of the Bavarian Gymnastics Association .
Over the years other departments were formed in addition to gymnastics: fencing (1880), singers (1880), football (1897), batting, fistball, wrestling, ice hockey (all 1900), hockey, athletics (both 1910). On February 27, 1900, the footballers left the club and founded their own club, FC Bayern Munich .
In the First World War, more than 700 members were killed, several departments broke up, some of which were founded later: Handball (1920), boxing, judo (both 1926), hockey (1928), tennis, table tennis (both 1937), Badminton (1956), weightlifting (1966), karate (1967), tennis (1969), dancing (2000) and volleyball (2004).

badminton
In badminton, MTV Munich became German team champions in 1879 in 1962 and from 1964 to 1967 in an intermittent manner . In the individual disciplines , players such as Siegfried Betz , Franz Beinvogl , Günter Ledderhos and Anke Betz won numerous national titles. Rupert Liebl , Alfred Schwarz , Lydia Ledderhos and Ursula Verhoeven also won medals .
ice Hockey
In 1900 the game association for batball, fistball, field and ice hockey was founded at MTV Munich . The MTV successfully took part in the German ice hockey championships played from 1912 . Both 1913 and 1914 you reached the final, where you were defeated by the Berlin ice skating club . In 1913 the ice hockey department organized the "1st International Munich Ice Hockey Tournament" and hosted the 1913 European ice hockey championship .
After the First World War, ice hockey continued to be played successfully. At the German championships in 1920 and 1921 , the MTV is again runner-up behind the Berliner SC. Finally in 1922 you can finally overcome the Berliner SC and become German champions. It is the first championship that the Berliner SC does not win and will be the only championship title for a Munich ice hockey team for 72 years - until the EC Hedos Munich wins the title . In addition, the MTV won 4 Bavarian and 4 South Bavarian championships .
On December 23, 1923, after the transfer of many players from MTV Munich and MEV 1883 Munich, an ice hockey department was founded at SC Riessersee . As a result, other MTV players transfer to the SCR until the MTV ice hockey department is finally dissolved in 1924.
Soccer
The football pioneer Walther Bensemann , u. a. DFB founding member and creator of the Kicker Sportmagazin , formed the first soccer team of MTV Munich in 1897 with some companions, which competed for the first time at the Bavarian Gymnastics Festival in Ansbach . After the founding phase, there was an internal dispute about the further development of the football department of MTV. A general assembly of the MTV rejected the association's accession to the South German Football Association . The southern German football pioneer and DFB co-founder Gustav Manning now convinced the footballers in MTV to break away from the gymnasts and to found their own club, which joined the association. At that time, the MTV players were already the strongest force in Munich football and therefore predestined for a pioneering role.
On February 27, 1900 therefore took place in the inn Bäckerhöfl a meeting of the football department of the MTV Munich instead, which at 21:30 to Weinhaus Gisela in Schwabing shifted. The eleven former players of the club Otto Ludwig Naegele , Georg Schmid, Carl and Fritz Wamsler , Arthur Ringler , Wilhelm Focke , Paul Francke , Kuno Friederich , Albert Zoepfel , Josef Pollack and Franz John founded FC Bayern Munich on the same evening . This meant the temporary end of the football department of MTV Munich.
Nowadays, numerous children's, youth and men's teams are active in the football department of MTV Munich, from which, among other things, the future national player Peter Grosser emerged. Before the introduction of the Bundesliga, Grosser played for Bayern Munich and then moved to TSV 1860 Munich , with whom he won the 1964 cup and 1966 German champions .
Judo
The MTV is one of the oldest still existing judo clubs in Germany. The MTV currently has a men's team, but not a women's team, as there are too few weight classes for women. In 2010, the men's team won first place in the Munich district league, but refused promotion due to unfavorable days of competition.
Table tennis
Several members of the table tennis department were among the leading players in Germany after the Second World War . The men's team was German champion seven times between 1947 and 1954. After winning the title for the fifth time in a row, the men were awarded the silver laurel leaf on July 14, 1951 in Munich by the President of the German Table Tennis Federation DTTB Karl-Heinz Eckardt . When several men retired during the 1961/62 season, the club came before a withdrawal from the league by merging with TTC Harlaching and continuing to play under the flag of MTV. The department was headed by Peter Kuhn, the previous chairman of the TTC Harlaching.
The women's team won the national title in 1951. Later it played temporarily in the Bundesliga , from which it was relegated in 1975. Although it won the following year in the league, but refrained from participating in the promotion round and was withdrawn from the game.
MTV has had an active table tennis department again since the 2015/16 season.

MTV square on Marbachstrasse
In 1910, the association leased a site on Marbachstrasse in Mittersendling on which a lawn with changing rooms and showers was laid out. In addition, a wooden auditorium was built. The first international soccer match in Munich took place on this sports field in 1911 . The German national team lost to Hungary 1: 4. In 1913 the final of the German championship took place on the MTV square , in which VfB Leipzig beat Duisburg SpV 3-1. In the 1922/23 season, the place was temporarily the home of FC Bayern Munich , which also played the final of the South German Cup there , which was lost to SpVgg Fürth 3: 4 on June 17, 1923 . In the mid-1920s the square was abandoned and later the site was completely built over. Today the area of the former MTV-Platz is enclosed by the Marbachstraße, the Tutzinger, the Passauer and the Andechser Straße.
