Josef Pollack

Josef Pollack (born March 20, 1880 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † September 23, 1958 in White Plains ) was a German football player and businessman .

Career

Soccer player

Pollack, born in Freiburg, son of the Jewish businessman Edward Pollack and his wife Flora Pollack (née Neuberger), founded the Freiburg football club with some fellow students on December 17, 1897 , of which Gustav Manning was the first chairman , co-founder and active player of the club . Elected secretary of the Association of South German Football Associations (VSFV) in 1897 , Manning wanted to integrate Munich, which had previously not been on the football map, into the association. To this end, he sent Franz John and Josef Pollack, whom he knew from his time at Freiburg FC, to Munich.

Pollack came to Munich in 1899 and joined the soccer department of MTV Munich in 1879 , founded FC Bayern on February 27, 1900 with ten other soccer players after a dispute about joining the VSFV, which was opposed to the gymnastics-dominated board of the MTV 1879 Munich . He was both the club's first secretary and first goal-getter . In 1902 he also became a member of the VSFV leadership. In 1903 he emigrated to the United States , where he was related.

In New York he found a job with the company "Max Pollack & Co.". Later he was involved in the founding of the business association "US Thread Association", whose president he was like in 1934 of its successor organization "Thread Institute". After finishing his professional career, he became honorary president of the institution; he also sat on the advisory board of Chase Manhattan Bank .

In his spare time he devoted himself to golf, served as treasurer for the Jewish community of White Plains and later donated 300,000 Reichsmarks to his former Freiburg FC to build the Möslestadion before he died in a nursing home in White Plains in 1958 at the age of 78 . Pollack was buried in the "Union Field Cemetery" in Queens ; he left behind his wife Leona (née Baum), whom he married in 1915 and their son Edward M.

Pollack was made an honorary member on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of FC Bayern Munich.
