Self Esteem ( English for " self-esteem ") is a song by the American punk band The Offspring . The song is the second single from their third studio album Smash and was released on December 22, 1994. The piece helped the band achieve a commercial breakthrough in Europe.

content

Lyrically, it's about a man who has low self-esteem and cannot assert himself against his girlfriend. He's already thought about ending the relationship with her ten times, but whenever she comes by, he can't bring himself to do it and takes her back. Although the man knows that she is taking advantage of him and is only playing with him, he tells himself that this is okay because he has no self-confidence. The woman transfers him, cheats with his friends and insults him. He knows that he actually has to get up and break up with her, but he doesn't have the courage to do it and tells himself that the situation is not that bad. When she rings his doorbell drunk again at night to have sex with him, he knows that he should actually say no, but again he can't and lets things take their course.

production

The song was produced by music producer Thom Wilson and the lyrics were written by The Offspring singer Dexter Holland .

Music video

The video for the song was shot under the direction of Darren Lavett in August 1994.

It shows the band playing the song in a darkened room. In between you can see stunt scenes by Evel Knievel and unknown people. Dexter Holland , front man of the group, wears three different band t-shirts from the Sex Pistols , The Germs and The Vandals in the video . You can also see brief x-rays that are reminiscent of the single cover.
