The Germs are an early American punk band .

history

The band was formed in April 1977 by Darby Crash (Jan Paul Beahm), Pat Smear (Georg Ruthenberg), Michelle Baer and Diana Grant in Los Angeles . Baer's position on drums took over shortly after the founding of Dottie Danger alias Belinda Carlisle , who had to leave the band after only a few weeks due to illness (she later became a member of the punk band Go-Go’s ) and was replaced by DJ Bonebreak (Don Bolles) has been. In 1978 the band signed a recording deal with Slash and released their debut album (GI) in December 1979 , which became a milestone in American punk / hardcore . On December 7, 1980, Darby Crash died of a heroin overdose at the age of 22. Shortly afterwards, the Germs disbanded.

In 2007 the film What We Do Is Secret was released , which deals with the history of the band. Actor Shane West portrayed the late Darby Crash so convincingly that Pat Smear offered to join the band in real life, which West accepted. Since then the Germs have been giving concerts again and were among other things in the line-up of the Warped Tour in 2006 and 2008. The Germs were also on tour in their new formation in Europe, where they were accompanied by the German old-school hardcore band Hammerhead .
