Hole ( Engl .: Hole) is an American grunge - band , which in 1989 by Courtney Love in Los Angeles was founded. The band officially broke up in 2002. In 2010 the reunification was announced.

meaning

The band is often associated with the riot grrrl movement that emerged in the early 1990s. However, Hole lacks the political attitude of the riot grrrls from Washington (e.g. Bikini Kill , Bratmobile ). Courtney Love, however, often expresses herself positively about women who make hard music and play their instruments themselves and embodies this herself. With her voice, which is considered “dirty”, she breaks female singing norms. The band had their biggest hit with Doll Parts (1994, Live Through This ). Drummer Patty Schemel was the first woman on the cover of Modern Drummer magazine .

Through the marriage of the singer Courtney Love to Kurt Cobain from Nirvana , the band received special attention. They also wrote and played songs together.

Band history

In the summer of 1989, Courtney Love was looking for a guitarist through a newspaper advertisement, whereupon Eric Erlandson got in touch. The band's first release was the 1990 EP Retard Girl . Even if Hole was a band, it was shaped by the dominant in the foreground and appearing love, which exchanged its band members several times until the band finally broke up.

The single Dicknail followed in March 1991 . Next came Teenage Whore as the first release from Pretty on the Inside , which was released in September. Hole then played in Europe as the opening act for Mudhoney when the band experienced the first signs of breakup. Rue was fired for allegedly bad studio work, after which Emery also left the band. With Patty Schemel as the new drummer and Lesley Hardy on bass, the single Beautiful Son (1991) was recorded. Hardy left the band again in 1993 and was replaced by Kristen Pfaff .

Kurt Cobain committed suicide in April 1994 five days before the album Live Through This was released . The song Doll Parts involuntarily became the identical soundtrack of grieving fans. Live Through This achieved platinum status in the USA and also enjoyed high chart positions in numerous other countries. A few months later, bassist Kristen Pfaff died of a heroin overdose on June 16, 1994 . The band did not split up, instead the Canadian Melissa Auf der Maur joined as bassist.

In February 1995, Hole recorded an MTV Unplugged concert and after a few tours decided to take a creative break. In the meantime the CD Ask for It was released , which contains radio recordings from 1991. In 1996, the band released the Fleetwood Mac cover version Gold Dust Woman, a song on the soundtrack for The Crow . With My Body the Handgrenade a record was also released that contains 14 previously unreleased songs and The First Session , on which the band's first four recordings are ever.

Celebrity Skin was released in September 1998 . Stylistically removed from the roots, the band sounded far better. Shortly thereafter, Patty Schemel was fired for problems in the studio and with drugs and was replaced by Samantha Maloney. After touring the USA, Great Britain and Australia and the singles Celebrity Skin , Awful and Malibu , Melissa Auf der Maur left the band in 1999 to concentrate on solo work and her photography career. A 19-year-old concert-goer died at the Swedish Hultsfred Festival. Love had drawn spectators onto the stage, whereupon the influx of visitors increased the pressure on the front rows. Individual viewers reported having difficulty breathing due to the pressure. Hole then played at a festival in Madrid. Love expressed regret over the Spanish organizer. It is tragic that there was a fatal accident during a great concert. The question of canceling the tour was never relevant for the band. After the release of the previously unreleased song Be a Man for the soundtrack to Every Damn Sunday and the B-side Best Sunday Dress in 1999, the band finally broke up in 2002 after a good two years without any news worth mentioning. In 2010, Courtney Love announced the reunion on Facebook, but with a completely new cast, except for Love. A new album followed in April and a tour in the summer that also took the band to Europe. In 2014, the former members Eric Erlandson, Patty Schemel and Melissa auf der Maur finally returned to the band.
