Conny Freundorfer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Konrad "Conny" Freundorfer (born November 9, 1936 in Freising , † May 7, 1988 in Munich ) was a German table tennis player .

Greatest successes

Freundorfer was German champion nine times in a row from 1953 to 1961. He was 16 years old when he won his first title. This makes him the youngest DMs title holder to date (2010). He denied 102 internationals, participated in nine world championships and four European championships and won 3 times the 1956 hosted the national ranking tournaments . In 1959 he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf of the Federal Republic of Germany for outstanding sporting achievements.

He was German individual champion nine times. Together with Eberhard Schöler , he held the record until 2015, which Timo Boll then beat with his tenth title win.

Career

In 1948 Freundorfer joined TSV Jahn Freising. In 1951 he moved to MTV Munich in 1879 . As early as 1950 - just 13 years old - he won the German championship with the club. He played his first international game in 1952 in Wiesbaden against Austria. In 1954 he left the MTV Munich club due to discrepancies and switched to TSV Milbertshofen ; when the Milbertshofen team disbanded in 1967, he went to SV Weißblau-Allianz München . He later returned to TSV Milbertshofen, which he left in 1976 out of annoyance over a non-line-up. In 1977 he played for Hertha BSC (regional league), in 1980 he went to SV Weißblau-Allianz München (regional league), where he played in a team with his son.

By 1962 he won most of his titles. In 1962 there was a changing of the guard: Eberhard Schöler became the best player in Germany. When the DTTB Freundorfer did not nominate for the team that was to contest the European Championship in 1962, he also refrained from participating in the individual competitions. Freundorfer played in the top German and also in the Bundesliga for 10 years . After that he took care of his sporting goods store, which opened in Munich in 1960. In 1988 he died as a cyclist in a traffic accident in Munich.

Freundorfer had been married to his wife Hildegard Zeitler since May 1958 and had a son (* 1958) who was also called Konrad.

properties

Freundorfer was considered unconventional in many ways. As a left-hander, he was uncomfortable for any opponent. His discipline and unreliability was also frequently criticized. This also led to the separation from his first club MTV Munich in 1879 .

Voices about Conny Freundorfer

“His absolute pleasure in playing, his joy in movement, which often resulted in playfulness, played some tricks on him. In its heyday, however, Conny finally wrested the sport of table tennis from the café atmosphere and made it popular with the unbelievable ease and fullness of his imagination. His virtuosity inspired and fascinated people. Young and old, table tennis fans and casual watchers. This secures Freundorfer his box seat in table tennis history. "

- Friedrich-Karl Brauns (sports journalist) in his obituary

"Fast legs, an extraordinary feeling for the ball and the sure instinct to do the right thing at the right moment."

- Eberhard Schöler on Freundorfer
