Rudolf Gruber (table tennis player)

Rudolf "Rudi" Gruber (born June 17, 1922 in Munich-Neuhausen ; † June 8, 2002 in Kirchseeon ) was a German table tennis functionary who held numerous honorary and management positions. For his services to table tennis he was awarded the ITTF Merit Award and the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class.

In addition to handball and gymnastics, Rudolf Gruber was an active player in table tennis at PSV Munich , where he was one of the founding members of the table tennis department in 1938, of which he was head of department from 1945 to 1965. With his men's team he played in the Bavarian Oberliga, the top German division at the time. In the 1950s he was South German runner-up in doubles with Idel Pfeffer and second at the German university championships behind Dieter Mauritz . He later joined the SV Weißblau München and the DJK München-Ost, and from 1975 he was active at SC Baldham.

Immediately after the Second World War, he helped found the Bavarian table tennis association BTTV . In the course of time he took on voluntary functionary duties in various table tennis organizations. He shaped the further development of the German table tennis sport. He worked on the first betting gaming regulations - the DTTB sweepstakes order is based on the co-developed by Gruber Bavarian gaming regulations - as well as the introduction of the national ranking tournament , the German Cup Championships and the Bundesliga . According to Hans Wilhelm Gäb , Gruber was the "father of the Bundesliga". Since the early 1990s, he has campaigned for the rate to be reduced from 21 to 11 points, which came into force in 2001.

Honors

In 1989 Rudolf Gruber was the first German to be awarded the ITTF Merit Award by the world table tennis association ITTF . In July 1991 he was the first German to receive the Dr Dieter Mauritz Memorial Prize (donated by Dieter Mauritz ) for outstanding services in responsible areas at the general assembly of the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB ) . On February 19, 1997, the then Bavarian Minister of Culture, Hans Zehetmair, presented him with the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .

Private

Rudolf Gruber graduated from the Wittelsbacher Gymnasium in Munich . In 1949 he graduated from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with a degree in communications engineering and later worked as a telecommunications engineer. In April 1948 he married his wife Lieselotte "Lilo" (1923–2009), who until 1982 was a woman manager in the Bavarian Table Tennis Association. From this marriage, twins were born in mid-1961.

Rudolf Gruber Memorial Prize

In order to preserve the memory of Gruber, the rules of honor of the Bavarian Table Tennis Association provide for the Rudolf Gruber Memorial Prize . This prize can be awarded

“To long-standing, well-deserved employees of the association, its branches and its members, or to public figures who have promoted and enriched the development of table tennis in Bavaria with trend-setting ideas and their implementation.

Criteria for the award are high services to the community of BTTV, to the development of the statutes and regulations, to the adaptation of the game operations to changed conditions and requirements, to an expansion of the competition system within Bavaria and to the outside world, to a comprehensive offer everyone who is interested in table tennis or whose interest in this sport can be aroused by it. "
