Anton Breumair

Anton "Toni" Breumair (born March 18, 1927 in Augsburg ; † May 1, 2012 ) was a German table tennis player . He took part twice in world championships and three times in European championships and was twice German team champion. In 2006 he became senior world champion in doubles. His forte was the backhand attack.

In 1946, Breumair began playing table tennis. From 1947 he played for the MTV Munich 1879 club . With this he became German team champion in 1951 (together with Walter Than , among others ). In the same year he moved to TSV Milbertshofen . Here, too, he won the German team championship in 1952. The other club stations were TSV Schwaben Augsburg (1954–1957), Police SV Augsburg (1957–1961) and Post SV Augsburg (later Post SV Telekom Augsburg, from 1961). From 1966 he played in the Bundesliga with Post SV Augsburg . After a stopover in Biberbach, he returned to Post SV Augsburg in 1976. Most recently he played at SV Hammerschmiede Augsburg in the 2nd district league.

Because of these successes, Breumair was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf in 1951 . In 1988 the Bavarian Table Tennis Association (BTTV) awarded him the Gold Medal of Honor. Because of his exemplary fairness, he received the 2001 Hermann Haagen Memorial Prize from BTTV.

National

He was able to show numerous national successes: in 1962 he became Bavarian champion in singles, he won this championship six times in doubles and twice in mixed. In 1964 he was the South German champion in doubles with Martin Ness . With the Bavarian selection, he won the German Cup in 1955 .

He took part in German championships 18 times. He finished third eight times (three times in singles, four times in doubles and once in mixed). In 1960 he was German runner-up in the individual (behind Conny Freundorfer ).

In 1954 he was ranked third in the German ranking.

International

Breumair has been called up to the national team 12 times. At the World Championships in 1953 and 1959 , he only took part in the individual competitions. At the European Championships he was fifth with the German team in 1958 and seventh in 1960. In 1962 he only played in the individual competitions at the European Championship.

Even in old age, Breumair was still successful. Together with Herbert Zemsch, he was European champion in doubles in 2005 among senior citizens over 75. In 2006 he won the world championship in doubles with Otto Rau in Bremen among senior citizens over 75, and in 2008 in Gütersloh in the over 80 class the individual competition. In 2009 he won the singles title at the European Championship 80+.

Private

Breumair worked as a publishing clerk at Augsburger Allgemeine until 1990 and lived in Augsburg. He had been married since early 1958 and had two children. Toni Breumair died in 2012 and was buried in the old east cemetery in Augsburg .
