La Couarde-sur-Mer is a municipality with 1206 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) on the Île de Ré on the French Atlantic coast . It is a village on the south coast of the Île de Ré, opposite the coast of the island of Île d'Oléron . La Couarde is one of the smaller towns on the island. The municipality also has a very small port, Le Goisil , which is connected to the north coast at Loix via a small fairway . The coastal strip in La Couarde sur Mer is mostly a sandy beach with some parts stony (rocky) substrate, which makes it possible at low tide good mussels and other seafood to gather. But there are also some small sections with cliffs .

economy

Like most places on the island, this one essentially lives off

  • Oyster farming , which is carried out exclusively on the north coast.
  • fishing
  • Tourism. There are some hotels and campsites.
  • Sea tourism and water sports.
  • Agriculture
potatoes , asparagus , vegetables and wine are predominantly grown.
The light to medium-heavy sandy soil allows the cultivation of potato varieties that do not otherwise exist in France. They are the only potatoes in France that are allowed to carry the AOC label. The vegetables are marketed throughout France under the specially created and protected: Denomination of Origin Île de Ré .

Attractions

  • Bandstand
  • church
  • War memorial (1914 - 1918) from the 1920s (with additions from 1939 - 1945, etc.) with a larger than life (German) eagle lying on the ground in front of the monument as if it had fallen from its base - probably unique in France.
  • The small port le Goisil (also: le Goizil ) with access to the north coast
  • La Maline House of Culture
  • La Pergola , a small dance and excursion venue from 1936.
