Rivedoux-Plage is a French commune with 2,280 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) on the southeast coast of de Ile de Ré on the Atlantic coast in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine in the department of Charente-Maritime .
The place is at an altitude of 0 to 16 m, has an area of 4.52 km² and is the first municipality reached when you leave the mainland at La Rochelle and over the Pont de l'île de Ré to the Île de Ré drives. The bridge was completed in 1988 and made the ferries used up until then dispensable.
In the north of the village, across from the coast of the Vendée department , there is a wide, several kilometers long sandy beach, some with a small cliff . There is another large beach on the southeast coast, across from La Rochelle and the Île d'Oléron . The remains of a former fish lock can also be seen here. From here you can also walk to the Phare de Chauveau lighthouse at low tide .
economy
The place lives mainly from fishing, sea tourism, water sports and viticulture.
In the fertile east of the island, agriculture is practiced on more or less large plots. Mainly potatoes , vegetables and wine are grown on the island . The light to medium-heavy sandy soil allows the cultivation of potato varieties that are otherwise not found in France. They are the only potatoes in France that are allowed to carry the AOC label. The vegetables are marketed throughout France under the specially created and protected designation of origin Île de Ré .
Tourism is also an important industry. There are a large number of hotels and campsites.
history
In 1627 the English landed under Duke Buckingham on the island near Rivedoux-Plage and Sablanceaux. Jean de Saint-Bonnet, Marquis de Toiras (1585–1636), ruled the island at the time. Under difficult conditions he succeeded in repelling the English and liberating the island again.
