Sainte-Marie-de-Ré is a municipality with 3366 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) on the Île de Ré on the French Atlantic coast . It is a village without its own port on the south coast of the Île de Ré, opposite the coast of the island of Île d'Oléron . Sainte-Marie is one of the larger towns on the island. The market town of La Noue en Ré also belongs to the municipality . The coastal strip at Sainte-Marie is mostly a sandy beach with stony part (rocky) underground, which makes it possible at low tide good mussels and other seafood to gather. But there are also some small sections with cliffs .
history
Around 700 AD, Duke Eudes built a fortress near Sainte-Marie and a monastery in the settlement , where he is said to have spent his old age.
