Aytré is a commune with 8725 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the arrondissement of La Rochelle . The residents call themselves Aytrésiens .
geography
The municipality is located in the metropolitan area southeast of La Rochelle and borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west . Neighboring communities are:
- La Rochelle in the northwest,
- Périgny in the northeast,
- Saint-Rogatien in the east,
- La Jarne in the southeast and
- Angoulins in the south.
The Canal de la Moulinette runs along the northern border. It crosses a salt pan and finally flows into the Canal de Marans à La Rochelle .
Transport links
Aytré is accessed in a west-east direction from the D939 département road, which leads from La Rochelle to Surgères . The north-south axis forms the D137, which has been expanded here to a bypass road from La Rochelle under the name of the national road N137 . At the same time, a railway line runs from La Rochelle to Rochefort , which has a stop in the Plage-d'Aytré district . Another railway line branches off in the municipality and leads in the direction of Niort .
