The port of Ars-en-Ré |
Ars-en-Ré is a municipality with 1307 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the west of the Île de Ré on the French Atlantic coast in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in the Charente-Maritime department .
Ars-en-Ré has been named one of the most beautiful villages in France by the association Les Plus Beaux Villages de France .
geography
The municipality lies at an altitude of zero to 15 m and has an area of 10.95 km².
The harbor is dependent on the tide and falls almost completely dry at low tide, but the water level can also be maintained by means of a gate. Today it serves as a harbor for pleasure boats. A sailing school is also located here.
Most of the alleys in the center of Ars are so narrow that only one car can pass them at a time, so many are signposted as one-way streets.

history
The port of Ars used to be called by ships from the Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries , which were loaded with salt here. The tar-black paint on the upper half of the slender tower of the otherwise completely white church of Saint-Étienne also dates from this time and served as a navigation mark.
