history
Beynac-et-Cazenac spreads out on the edge of the Dordogne river on the rocky terraces below a 150 m high cliff. There were cave settlements in this place as early as the Bronze Age . When the four baronies of Périgord were founded, Beynac was one of them, along with Biron, Bourdailles and Mareuil. The first seigneur of Beynac was "on record" in 1115. The castle towering over the village dates back to the 12th century. In the Hundred Years' War Beynac was on the side of the French, and in 1370 the English were finally expelled.
Various “residential areas” were formed under the protection of the ramparts; in one of them mainly weavers settled. The port also contributed to the economic upturn; it was an important anchorage for merchant and transport shipping. In the period after the French Revolution until the middle of the 19th century, regional industries such as fishing, agriculture and house building became increasingly important. In 1827 the hamlet of Cazenac, 5 km away, was incorporated.
