The continuous population decline since the second half of the 19th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture as well as the associated loss of jobs.

economy

For centuries, the residents of the community lived on the produce of their fields and gardens, self-sufficient ; In addition, cattle breeding, a little viticulture and the planting of chestnuts and nut trees were carried out. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers settled in the village. Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses have been used as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .

history

It is unclear whether the place and / or its former castle (château) were affected during the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) or during the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598). In any case, they changed landlords several times from the 15th century . The last owner of the castle had it demolished during or shortly after the French Revolution .

Attractions

  • The single-nave late Romanesque parish church of Saint-Avit has a transept and was originally probably the chapel of the nearby castle. The bell gable is located on the border between the nave and the flat-closing apse . The church's furnishings include two angel figures dated to the 13th century and a holy water font (bénitier) with a lily cross .
  • In the vicinity of the village there is a source called Fontaine des trois évêques , where - according to local tradition - the bishops of the dioceses of Périgueux , Agen and Cahors are said to have gathered once a year .
