Saint-Martial-de-Nabirat ( Occitan Sent Marçal de Nabirac ) is one of a main town and several surrounding villages (hamlets) existing and farmsteads community with 584 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the southeast of the southern French departments of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine in the old cultural landscape of the Périgord .
location
The place Saint-Martial-de-Nabirat is a good 20 kilometers (driving distance) south of the city of Sarlat-la-Canéda or about 85 km southeast of Périgueux at an altitude of about 212 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is temperate and is influenced equally by the Atlantic and the mountains of the Massif Central ; Rain falls throughout the year.

The continuous population decline since the second half of the 19th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture as well as the associated loss of jobs.
economy
For centuries, the residents of the community lived on the produce of their fields and gardens, self-sufficient ; In addition, cattle breeding, a little viticulture and the planting of chestnuts and nut trees were carried out. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers settled in the village. Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses have been used as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) . The forestry plays an important role in the economic life of the community.
history
Although a church already existed earlier, the first written mention of the old place name Sanctus Martialis prope monte Domae dates back to the 14th century. It is unclear whether the place was affected during the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) or during the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598).
Attractions
- The single-nave Romanesque church of Saint-Martial was rebuilt in Gothic style in the 15th century and added a bell tower in the 19th century . The quarry stone masonry was exposed in the apse ; the walls and vaulted caps of the nave , however, are plastered and painted with joints .
- A former castle (Tours du Pech) is on the outskirts; in the vicinity is a pigeon-house (pigeon) .
- A wrought iron wayside cross (Croix du Treil) from the 18th or early 19th century shows Christ's instruments of passion and a small figure of Mary.

- At the end of the 17th century, a convent with the aim of religious renewal settled in the hamlet of Plapech .
