Cénac - choir side of the Romanesque church

Cénac-et-Saint-Julien is a French commune with 1206 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Dordogne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region .

The small town of Cénac lies at the foot of the rock massif on which the Bastide Domme was built. Outside the village is a Romanesque church that once belonged to a priory founded by an abbot of Moissac, Aquilanus, in 1090. The building probably dates from the early 12th century. Damaged several times during the chaos of war, the church was finally burned down by the Huguenot leader Geoffroy de Vivans in the 16th century . Only the choir was spared and was restored to its original condition through restoration. The transept and main nave of today's church building were rebuilt in the 19th century.

From the cemetery, the head of the choir with its stone-covered roof is visible, which is supported by buttresses decorated with leaf capitals. There are also a number of carved capitals with New and Old Testament and allegorical motifs on the inside .
