In the 19th century the population of the municipality was between 600 and 950 people. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs as a result of the mechanization of agriculture have since led to a continuous decline in the population to the lows in the 1990s.
economy
The agriculture, which has been practiced for centuries for the purpose of self-sufficiency, is still of great economic importance for the community today. The viticulture, which was formerly also operated here, was completely given up after the phylloxera crisis; Tobacco and corn are also on the decline - instead, forests, fields and pastures, but also walnut , chestnut and fruit trees dominate the region in the Périgord Noir . Also, foie gras and truffles are among the best regional cuisine. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).
Attractions
- The parish church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens , consecrated in chains to Saint Peter, is a single-nave Romanesque building from the end of the 12th century, which, however - after the turmoil of the Hundred Years War - was stabilized in the 17th century by a new tower-crowned west building with mighty buttresses Corners, which could offer protection to part of the population in times of threat from robber gangs or marauding soldiers. A spiral staircase ( vis ) in a round stair tower on the south side leads to a gallery with a stone fireplace. The interior of the church houses a polychrome processional cross from the 18th century. The church was already classified as a monument historique in 1948 .
- Surroundings
- The Château de Sermet , possibly belonging to the Knights Templar or the Order of St. John , originally dates from the 14th century ( donjon ); However, it was expanded in the 16th century and adapted to contemporary tastes.
