Some minor finds show the presence of humans in prehistoric times. Millennia later, the area belonged to the settlement area of the Celtic tribe of the Petrocorians , who were famous for their excellent ironworking. In Roman times the area was on the road from Cahors ( Divona Cadurcorum ) to Périgueux ( Vesunna ).

The first mention of the place under its Latin or Occitan name Sen Pomponct comes from the High Middle Ages. Shortly before or during the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) the castle ( château ) and parts of the city wall ( remparts ) were built; The castle was owned by the Order of St. John for a long time .
