In the 19th century the population of the community was usually well over 500. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture have led to a continuous decline in population since then, which reached its lowest point in the 1970s and 1980s.

economy

Up to the present day agriculture plays the biggest role in the economic life of the municipality. The viticulture that was once operated here was completely given up after the phylloxera crisis towards the end of the 19th century. Tobacco and corn are also on the decline - instead, forests, fields and pastures, but also walnut , chestnut and fruit trees dominate the region. Also, foie gras and truffles are among the best regional cuisine. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

In medieval documents the place is referred to as la Cassaigne (1251), Cassanea (1320) and finally as Cassanha (1365). The church was part of a priory of the Abbey of St-Amand-de-Coly ; Parts of the place probably belonged to a commandery of the Templar Order , whose ownership passed to the Order of St. John after its dissolution in the years 1307-1312 . The landlords ( seigneurs ) of the Domme family also exerted influence on the fortunes of the place at times.

Attractions

  • The single-nave parish church of Saint-Barthélemy was originally a priory church of the Abbey of Saint-Amand-de-Coly. The building dates from the 12th century, but was redesigned after the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) so that only the apse , the elevated west portal with two Romanesque capitals and the northern nave wall are original. The south side of the nave was opened around 1600 and a side aisle was added. The church building was classified as a monument historique in 1936 .
  • Close to the church is the parsonage ( presbytère ) covered with stone shingles ( lauzes ) , which was built around 1600 - possibly using the stones from the demolition of the former outbuildings of the dissolved priory. It is characterized by a round stair tower and two baroque dormer windows and has also been recognized as a monument historique since 1936 .
  • In the former cemetery there is a stone cross with an octagonal shaft, in the center stone of which is turned by 90 ° the letters MARIA can be seen. It is dated to the 16th century and has been classified as a Monument historique since 1926 .
  • Near the village is a former tithe barn ( grange dimière ) from the 12th and 15th centuries, which is now used as a private residence. The building is associated with the Knights Templar and has been classified as a Monument historique since 1980 .
  • Nearby is a dovecote ( pigeonnier ), which must have belonged to a castle ( château ) or manor ( manoir ) that has disappeared .
