The continuous population decline in the first half of the 20th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture as well as the associated loss of jobs. The renewed increase in population towards the end of the millennium is related to the proximity to the Vézère valley, which is becoming increasingly popular for tourists and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

economy

For centuries, the residents of the community lived on the produce of their fields and gardens, self-sufficient ; In addition, cattle breeding, a little viticulture and the planting of chestnuts were carried out. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers also settled in the village. Since the 1960s, some empty houses have been used as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .

history

The Vézère valley is world famous for its prehistoric caves.

Attractions

  • The single-nave parish church of Saint-Pantaléon was built around 1160/80, but it was partially renewed and rebuilt in the 15th and 17th centuries; This gave it its extremely defensive appearance - in particular, the almost windowless increase in the apse during the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) in order to create a protective space is particularly noticeable. The portal, which has been stepped down several times, shows an unusually rich design for a simple village church with set columns and a circumferential rope rod ; figurative jewelry is hardly available. The nave , which was largely renovated in the 17th century , has a beamed ceiling; the flat-closing apse has a barrel vault . The church building, covered with stone shingles (lauzes), has been recognized as a monument historique since 1929 .
  • A stately building (Château de Cramirat) , possibly built by the Knights Templar and later used by the Order of Malta, has been recognized as a monument historique since 1964 .

Surroundings

  • About one kilometer southwest of the village is the so-called Castel-Merle , a group of rocky outcrops ( abris ) that were visited by humans in prehistoric times. Several of them ( Abri Blanchard , Abri Castanet , Abri Labattut , Abri Reverdit ) have been recognized as Monuments historiques for decades .
  • An unusually shaped stone road or Hosanna cross from the 16th century has been classified as a Monument historique since 1921 .
