In the 19th century the population of the municipality was mostly between 350 and 450 people. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture led to a continuous population decline, with lows in the 1950s and 1960s.
economy
Up to the present day agriculture plays the biggest role in the economic life of the municipality. The viticulture that was previously operated here was completely given up after the phylloxera crisis . Tobacco and corn are also on the decline - instead, forests, fields and pastures, but also walnut , chestnut and fruit trees dominate the region. Also, foie gras and truffles are among the best regional cuisine. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).
history
The parish church of the village was a priory church of the abbey of Saint-Jean-d'Angély in the 12th century ; in 1317 it belonged to the diocese of Périgueux . In a papal bull from 1350 the place is mentioned under the name Vayrinhacum .
Attractions
- The parish church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens was built in the 12th century, but was partially changed in the 16th and 19th centuries. A console frieze with grotesque and obscene figures runs under the eaves of the apse . The round stair tower and the north aisle, through which the church is usually entered, were added in the 16th century. Another unadorned portal is on the south side. In the apse calotte , remains of a representation of Christ Pantocrator can be seen in a mandorla and surrounded by the four evangelist symbols . Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1948 .
- Surroundings
- Only ruins remain of the Château de Rocanadel ( 44 ° 49 ′ 4 ″ N , 1 ° 20 ′ 17 ″ E ), built in the 15th and 16th centuries ; nevertheless, the building complex was recognized as a monument historique in 1948 .
- The Château de Veyrignac is a two- to three-storey building from the 18th century with corner projections ; Jacques-Germain Soufflot is named as the architect , but his plans were probably revised by the master builder. It stands on the site of a medieval building, of which two round towers have been preserved. It is privately owned and has been classified as a Monument historique since 2013 .
