Salles-de-Belvès ( Occitan Salas de Belvès ) is a place and a community with a population of 71 (as at 1st January 2017) in the east of the southern French departments of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

Salles-de-Belvès is located in the wooded landscape of the Périgord noir a good 40 km (driving distance) southwest of the city of Sarlat-la-Canéda or a good 71 km south-east of Périgueux at an altitude of about 225 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is temperate and is influenced equally by the Atlantic and the mountains of the Massif Central ; Rain falls throughout the year.

The continuous population decline in the first half of the 20th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture as well as the associated loss of jobs.

For centuries, the residents of the community lived on the produce of their fields and gardens, self-sufficient ; In addition, cattle breeding, a little viticulture and the planting of chestnuts and nut trees were carried out. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers also settled in the village. Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses, but also new buildings, have been used as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .

Small stone age finds were made at the Camp de César , which belongs to the municipality .
The old place name Salis is first mentioned in a document from the year 1053. Assaults during the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) and the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) are likely, but not proven.
Attractions
The single-nave Romanesque parish church was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary , but was renamed Saint-Sacerdos after the parish was taken over by the cathedral chapter of Sarlat . The exterior and interior of the rather unadorned church building, whose already slightly raised apse was supplemented by an almost windowless shelter, is crowned by a three-part bell gable. The current windows were added in the 18th or 19th century.
Personalities
- The Patriarch Peter Thomas (around 1305-1366), a saint of the Catholic Church who died in Cyprus , was born in Salles-de-Belvès.
