location

In the 19th century the place usually had between 900 and 1,200 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture have led to a significant population decline since then, but this has turned into slight growth again since the 1960s due to the increasing tourism in the region.

economy

Up to the present day agriculture plays the biggest role in the economic life of the community: The viticulture that was formerly also practiced here was, however, completely abandoned after the phylloxera crisis; Tobacco and corn are also on the decline - instead fields, but also walnuts , chestnuts and fruit trees dominate the region. Also, truffles and foie gras are among the local products. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

So far, no prehistoric finds have been made in the municipality that could attest to the presence of early humans.

A medieval mention of the place under the name Auriacum comes from the 13th century. Until 1925 the place was called Auriac-de-Montignac .

Attractions

  • The Saint-Étienne church is a single-nave Romanesque building from the 12th century with a rectangular encased apse . In the course of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453), the small church received a fortified crossing tower. The extremely unadorned facade is elevated by a rectangular gable ; only a high window illuminates the vaulted nave. The church building was recognized as a monument historique in 1973 .
  • The rectory ( presbytère ) from the 17th century standing next to the church is connected to it by a small roofed balustrade bridge.
  • The chapel of Saint-Rémy , a tower-free and unadorned late Gothic building from the 15th or 16th century in the open field ( 45 ° 6 ′ 38 ″  N , 1 ° 7 ′ 20 ″  E ) was also built in 1948 recognized as a monument historique .
  • The Château de la Faye ( 45 ° 6 ′ 18 ″  N , 1 ° 7 ′ 34 ″  E ) is a rather simple building from the 13th to 15th centuries, the windows of which were renewed in the 18th and 19th centuries. The privately owned palace building was recognized as a monument historique in 1948 .
  • A stone hut made of dry stone masonry ( cabane ) - probably used to guard the fields during harvest time - stands on a parcel called La Nicote .
