Saint-Germain-de-Belvès ( Occitan Sent German de Belvès ) is a place and several hamlets (hamlets) existing and farmsteads community with 176 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the southern French department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

location

The place Saint-Germain-de-Belvès is just under 30 km (driving distance) southwest of the city of Sarlat-la-Canéda or approx. 63 km southeast of Périgueux at an altitude of approx. 225 m above sea level. d. The climate is temperate and is influenced equally by the Atlantic and the mountains of the Massif Central .

The continuous decline in population since the first half of the 20th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture as well as the associated loss of jobs.

economy

For centuries, the residents of the community lived on the produce of their fields and gardens, self-sufficient ; In addition, cattle breeding, a little viticulture and the planting of chestnuts were carried out. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers settled in the village. Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses have been used as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .

The place is first mentioned in 1259; a census of the fireplaces (26) in 1365 suggests about 135 to 150 inhabitants. According to a document from 1495, the place was fortified.

Attractions

  • The village square and the adjoining streets with their old houses are extremely worth seeing.
  • The origin of the parish church of Saint-Germain dates back at least to the 13th century. It is unclear whether it suffered damage during the Hundred Years' War (1337–1453) or during the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598). In any case, the church was renovated in the neo-Romanesque style between 1881 and 1884 .
  • On the outskirts there is a well house and a wash house (lavoir) from the 19th century.

  • About a kilometer walk east of the village is the privately owned former Chartreuse de Conty , whose gardens can be visited.
