Saint-Geniès castle next to the church

The municipality of Saint-Geniès with 939 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is located in the Dordogne department of the French Périgord .

The village is known for its appearance with several stone-roofed old houses as well as for the old castle next to the church in the center. The church building was badly damaged in the Wars of Religion , and the tower dates from the 16th century. This explains the variety of architectural styles on the building, the oldest part of which is of Romanesque origin. The entrance to the castle is right next to the east side of the church. It dates from the 15th century and shows the facade of a 17th century mansion.

The Gothic Chapelle du Cheylard stands on a hill just outside the village . In the interior it shows frescoes from the 14th century depicting the life of Jesus and the legends of the saints . Near the chapel, the ruins of a donjon , remnants of a castle belonging to the Gontaut family, are reminiscent of the seigneurie that existed in this area as early as 1178.
