In the second half of the 19th century, the population of the place rose briefly to almost 1,000. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture have led to a continuous population decline that has only come to a standstill in the last few decades.

economy

Up to the present day agriculture, which used to be mainly for self-sufficiency , plays the biggest role in the economic life of the municipality: The viticulture that was formerly also practiced here was, however, completely given up after the phylloxera crisis ; Tobacco and corn are also on the decline - instead fields and pastures, but also walnut , chestnut and fruit trees dominate the region. Truffle and foie gras are also regional specialties. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

In the early Middle Ages, the Benedictine monastery Calabre was not far from today's location , but it was destroyed by the Moors and Normans in the 8th and 9th centuries ; in 1153 it is mentioned as belonging to the Sarlat Abbey. The church in today's town was probably originally a priory church , because in 1344 a 'prior' from Calviac was elected bishop of Sarlat . The Hundred Years War (1337-1453) wreaked havoc in the entire region; the historian Jean-M. Maubourguet wrote in 1926: In Calviac there was no longer a soul… The land was left to the wild animals… .

On June 8, 1944, the SS Panzergrenadier Regiment 4 "Der Führer" set fire to the nearby hamlet of Rouffillac on its way from southern France to Normandy , where the Allied invasion ( Operation Overlord ) had just begun, killing eight people ; two days later the troop reached Oradour-sur-Glane .

A - probably planned - further expansion of the church did not take place. While the Romanesque part is barrel vaulted , the late Gothic north aisle shows ribbed vaults . The otherwise rather unadorned church building was recognized as a Monument historique in 1970 .
