In the 19th century the population of the municipality was mostly between 600 and 900 people. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture have led to a continuous population decline since then. The lows were reached in the 1970s and 1980s.
economy
Up to the present day agriculture plays the biggest role in the economic life of the municipality. The viticulture that was once operated here was completely given up after the phylloxera crisis towards the end of the 19th century. Tobacco and corn are also on the decline - instead, forests, fields and pastures, but also walnut , chestnut and fruit trees dominate the region. Also, foie gras and truffles are among the best regional cuisine. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).
history
The existence of the Romanesque church suggests that the place was settled in medieval times.
Attractions
- The single-nave parish church of Notre-Dame is originally a Romanesque building from the 12th century, but after the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) it received a mighty defensive tower above the now flat apse , a Gothic west portal with profiled archivolts and two large side chapels . Only the upper part of the unadorned west facade with a three-part bell gable ( clocher mur ) seems to be still old. The nave is flat-roofed; the choir area is arched. The church building was classified as a monument historique in 1949 .
