Adriaan Joseph van Rossem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adriaan Joseph van Rossem (born December 17, 1892 in Chicago , Illinois , † September 4, 1949 , in Los Angeles , California ) was an American ornithologist .

Live and act

His father Adriaan Cornelis van Rossem (1865–1895) married Josephine Williams (1873–) on November 11, 1891. From this marriage another son named Walter Johannes (1894-) was born in addition to Adriaan Joseph. The father was a respected man in the municipal and business circles of Rotterdam and the Dutch East Indies , who eventually moved to Chicago via London to do international business. The maternal grandfather Joseph Williams from Goderich was also a successful businessman who earned his living with wood, manufacturing goods and shipping across the Great Lakes . In August 1894 his father's health deteriorated so much that he first returned to Holland and Switzerland for treatment. Finally he died on February 6, 1895 in Leysin-sur-Aigle .

For this reason, the mother initially returned to Canada with her two young children . In September 1895 she finally moved to California and built a house in Pasadena that had a beautiful view of the Arroyo Secco. This is where the children grew up and attended public and private schools before Adriaan Joseph began studying at the Throop Polytechnic Institute . In 1918 he married Grace Burr Coolidge (1888-1972), from whom he divorced in 1934. The sons Donald Richard and Adriaan Peter (1922-) emerged from the marriage. In 1934 he married Florence S. Stevenson, who died in 1944. This was followed by another marriage to Dorothy Sanderson, who died in 1946.

Scientific work

Joseph Grinnell (1877–1939) awakened an interest in natural history in the young van Rossem in 1903. When van Rossem published an article on the sulfur tyrant ( Pitangus sulphuratus ) in El Salvador in 1914 , Grinnell described it as excellent in a letter to van Rossem. His first research trips outside the Pasadena area took him in April 1909 together with James Benjamin Dixon (1886–1978) to the Coronado Islands , in the winter of 1910/11 to the area around the Salton Sea and in spring 1911 together with Alfred Brazier Howell (1886 –1961) to the island of Santa Cruz . From these trips the decision arose to collect in El Salvador. Here he stayed from February 10th to August 20th in 1912. The trip marked the beginning of his lifelong interest in tropical avifauna. In the meantime van Rossem had built a good reputation as a taxidermist and field researcher. John Eugene Law (1877–1931) commissioned him to collect for him in the Chiricahua Mountains from October 15, 1914 to June 5, 1915 . This resulted in an extraordinary harvest, which initially ended up in the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology , but was eventually transferred to Virginia by Laura Beatty Law Bailey. Since Law and van Rossem could not agree on the amount of the payment for his services, no publication appeared on this collection. The conflict with Law, which was waged in various forms, shaped van Rossem's dealings with other ornithologists from southern California.

From 1915 to 1917 he worked in the mining and real estate business in Sierra City , Sierra Nevada . During this time, his real passion - collecting - fell a little short, and yet he prepared around 300 bellows in that time. Together with Chester Converse Lamb (1882-1965) he worked in 1917 for the B. F Goodrich Company in a mobile office in road construction and as a supervisor. In April 1917, he and his brother were enlisted in the United States Army . This was followed by training in San Diego and Fort Lewis . In November he attended officers' school and completed his military service in Georgia . On June 5, 1918, he was promoted to sub-lieutenant and in November 1919 to lieutenant . He served as the commander of the machine gun company until May 1919, when he finally resigned as a reservist and returned to California.

During this time his association with Donald Ryder Dickey (1887-1932) began. Dickey followed his passion during this time and amassed a collection of 50,000 vertebrates. Van Rossem worked for 13 years as an assistant for the so-called Dickey Institute . The cooperation between the two was very fruitful and culminated in the award of the William Brewster Medal for their work The birds of El Salvador in 1939. The work actually came only from the pen of van Rossem, but he wanted his mentor Dickey the honor do not deny co-authorship.

This creative period also included publications on the plumage of the black tern ( Chlidonias niger ), a study on songbammers ( Melospiza melodia ) on the Santa Barbara Islands and the Coronado Islands , an investigation of the pygmy nuthatch ( Sitta pygmaea ) or critical comments on the Willow- yellow throat ( Geothlypis trichas ) in the southwest on the Pacific coast .

During the same period van Rossem carried out several research trips. So he visited southern California, Baja California , southern Nevada , Sonora and El Salvador . Together with Alden Holmes Miller (1906-1965) he visited Buena Vista Lake in California in 1922 . In 1925 he toured El Salvador again with Miller and Ruben Arthur Stirton (1901–1966). Here he taught the two young scientists hunting and preparation techniques.

In 1928 he was accepted at Occidental College in Los Angeles . He went through a three-year training in fine arts and improved his language skills. A course in zoology was also part of the training. In 1948 he received an honorary doctorate in science from the college.

After Dickey's death, his collection was temporarily housed in the California Institute of Technology and their future was uncertain. Financing was on shaky ground due to the difficult economic situation. The situation eased somewhat, as support came from Clinton Gilbert Abbott (1881-1946) from the San Diego Natural History Museum . Some projects were supported by Margrave Masauyi Hachisuka (1903-1953), who stayed for some time in southern California. Dicky's widow hardly supported van Rossem. At the endeavor of Loye Holmes Miller (1874–1970), a collaboration was established and the collection was transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles in 1940 . The exhibits were placed in the Clark Library and van Rossem was given a position as university curator in charge of the Dickey collection. He later became a senior museum zoologist. Since 1946 he also worked as a lecturer in zoology, which gave him the opportunity to participate in further training for advanced students to a limited extent.

After his death in 1949, the valuable collection of around 60,000 exhibits was moved to a fireproof building on the university campus in Westwood . Here his successor Thomas Raymond Howell (1924–2004) took care of the collection.

Between 1930 and 1940 van Rossem's research focus shifted to northwest Mexico. This led to his second major work, A Distributional Survey of the Birds of Sonora, Mexico . The inspiration for this work goes back to the large collection of bird skins from Sonora, which Dickey had acquired in 1929 from John Thomas Wright . Between 1930 and 1932 van Rossem visited the municipality of Guaymas and the islands of Sonora near the coast. In 1937 a trip followed that took him all over this Mexican state. Even after the work was published, he was drawn to this area again and again until 1948. He was often accompanied by Loye Miller.

In an effort to revise the taxonomy of Mexican and Central American birds, he visited Europe, and in particular the Natural History Museum , in 1933 . In 1938 he returned to Europe to attend the 9th International Ornithological Congress in Rouen . From the first visit to Europe with further research at the Louis Agassiz Museum of Comparative Zoology , the article Critical Notes on Middle American Birds emerged , which dealt with the classification of Central American birds and contained insightful analyzes of the collection of William Brewster . He also examined the collection of Marson Abbott Frazar (1860-1925), but it proved to be unreliable because the collector had prepared the bellows with unsuitable means and thus falsified the original color of the plumage. Among his weaker publications is Descriptions of twenty-one new races of Fringillidae and Icteridae from Mexico and Guatemala , for which he has also been heavily criticized. In 1939 he had the opportunity to travel to Europe again to pick up the Guggenheim scholarship . The trip was shortened by the outbreak of war, but nevertheless he insisted on visiting Paris, Brussels, Leiden and some cities in Germany as well as London.

Birds of the Charleston Mountains, Nevada and A Synopsis of the Savannah Sparrows of Northwestern Mexico are certainly among his most important writings from a time when his main focus was on his work on the avifauna of Sonora . Both deal with geographical and ecological aspects. In his last creative phase he dealt with the screech owls ( Megascops ) of Sonora, where he worked very closely with Loye Miller. His manuscript was abruptly interrupted by his death at an early stage and was therefore processed by Alden and Loye Miller in their article Geographic variation of the screech owls of the deserts of western north america .

Memberships

In 1934 he was elected a Fellow of the American Ornithologists' Union and was inducted into its governing body in 1946. In 1944 he served as President of the South Division of the Cooper Ornithological Club and served on the Board of Directors after that tenure. In 1937 he was elected a corresponding member of the Sociedad de Biología de México .
