Santa Barbara Island is a small, uninhabited island in California's Channel Islands in the Pacific . With only 2.625 km² it is the smallest island in the archipelago and in Signal Hill it reaches a height of 193 meters above sea level. Santa Barbara Island is located around 45 kilometers west of Santa Catalina Island and 61 kilometers south of the California coast, somewhat isolated in the center of the Channel Islands. The island is in front of the small Sutil Island (0.05 km²) to the southwest . Santa Barbara Island belongs to the county of the same name and is part of the Channel Islands National Park . The park administration maintains a small visitor contact point on the island.

history

The island was first sighted for Europe in 1542 by the Portuguese explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and a good 60 years later was named after Saint Barbara by the Spanish explorer Sebastián Vizcaíno .
