San Clemente Island , SCI for short, is the southernmost island of the Californian Channel Islands . The 39 km long and 147.13 km² large, uninhabited island reaches a height of 599 meters above sea level and administratively belongs to Los Angeles County in California . The city of San Clemente in Orange County is named after the island.
history
Archaeologists found traces of people on the island that are 10,000 years old. The island was discovered on November 23, 1602 by Sebastián Vizcaíno . He named the island San Clemente because that day was the memorial day of Clement of Rome . In the 19th and 20th centuries, the island was inhabited by farmers, fishermen and smugglers. The island has been administered by the United States Navy since 1934 .
