San Nicolas (English San Nicolas Island ) is one of the southern group of the California Channel Islands in the Pacific Ocean . Administratively, the island belongs to Ventura County , but it is administered by the United States Navy .

San Nicolas has a length of almost 15 km, a width of up to 5.53 km and an area of ​​58.93 km². The island does not have a permanent population, but there are up to 200 people (marines and employees) on it. San Nicolas reaches a height of 276 m above sea level in Jackson Hill . In front of the island in the west is the Begg Rock , popular with divers , which rises 90 m from the seabed and still reaches a height of 4 m above sea level.

history

The Mexican explorer Sebastián Vizcaíno was the first fair-skinned to discover the island on December 6, 1602, and gave it the name La Isla de San Nicolas .

San Nicolas allegedly numerous 1957-2019 were rockets of the US military started.
