The continuous decline in population in the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms, the resulting loss of jobs and the migration of many villagers to the cities.
history
The place name was first mentioned in the 12th century, but the place seems to have already existed in the early Middle Ages . It belonged to the Abbey of Gellone , but was later taken over by the Knights Templar , whose properties were confiscated between 1307 and 1312 and most of them passed to the Johanniter . The Hundred Years War began in 1337; in the Peace of Brétigny (1360) Sainte-Eulalie came to the English ; a few years later (1377) the place and its castle were destroyed. Further destruction resulted from mutual attacks during the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598)
Attractions
- Some preserved capitals and console figures still bear witness to the Romanesque origins of the single-nave Sainte-Eulalie priory church . However, the building itself suffered destruction in later times due to wars and new construction measures. Parts of the stone-faced facade are made of house stones, others are made of rubble stones ; the outer walls of the nave are plastered.
- The Château de Belsis dates from the 18th century and is located about 1 km northwest of the village in a wood.
- The Ormeaux Mill is a beautifully restored 18th century watermill .
