The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Sarlat-la-Canéda and the canton of Vallée de l'Homme (until 2015: canton of Montignac ).

La Chapelle-Aubareil is located about 40 kilometers southeast of Périgueux in the Périgord. La Chapelle-Aubareil is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Montignac in the north and north-west, Coly-Saint-Amand in the north-east, Saint-Geniès in the east, Marcillac-Saint-Quentin in the south, Tamniès in the south-west and Valojoulx in the west.
