Jaime de Armiñán Oliver (born March 9, 1927 in Madrid ) is a Spanish film director , screenwriter and writer .

Life

Armiñán was born in Madrid to the actress Carmita Oliver and the journalist Luis de Armiñán. His grandfather was the author and sculptor Federico Oliver Crespo and his grandmother the actress Carmen Cobeña . Armiñán initially studied law at the Complutense University of Madrid and after completing his studies worked as a journalist and theater writer. He created plays such as Eva sin manzana (1952), Sinfonía acabada (1955) and Nuestro fantasma , which was awarded the premio Lope de Vega in 1956, as well as film scripts from the late 1950s. Armiñán initially worked as a television writer and wrote books for various television series. He has had a long collaboration with director José María Forqué , for whom he wrote the scripts for Buscando a Mónica (1962), La becerrada (1963), El juego de la verdad (1963) and Tengo 17 años (1964).

Armiñán first directed the TV series Galería de maridos in 1959 . He made his debut feature film in 1969 with the musical comedy Carola de día, Carola de noche . As early as 1972 he had his international breakthrough with Mein Geliebtes Fräulein . The drama of an older woman who realizes she is a man and undergoes a sex reassignment process was nominated for an Oscar in 1973 for Best Foreign Language Film . Armiñán repeatedly addressed unfulfilled love in his films, for example in The Love of the Student Juan (1974), in which a twelve-year-old boy falls in love with his teacher, and An Impossible Love (1980), in which a widowed man gives a 13-year-old girl expires. An Impossible Love was Armiñán's second film in 1981, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

Armiñán returned to television in the mid-1980s and directed several episodes of the television series Cuentos imposibles , The Torero and Una gloria nacional . In 1995, his long last feature film as a director, El palomo cojo , was released before returning to the big screen in 2008 at 14, Fabian Road . Armiñán usually writes the scripts for his films himself. He is also a regular journalist for newspapers such as ABC and El Mundo .

Armiñán has been married to actress Elena Santonja since 1956 ; the marriage has three children.
