Sainte-Mondane ( Occitan : Senta Mundana ) is a place and a southwestern French community ( commune ) with 260 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the old cultural landscape of the Périgord in the department of Dordogne in the northeastern region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

The place Sainte-Mondane is located on the south bank of the Dordogne in the Périgord Noir about 18 kilometers (driving distance) southeast of Sarlat-la-Canéda at an altitude of about 100 meters above sea level. d. M .; the canton capital Carlux is about seven kilometers north. The place Souillac with its famous abbey church is only about 16 kilometers northeast.

In the 19th century the population of the municipality was mostly between 400 and 700 people. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture led to a continuous population decline, which led to a low population in the 1980s and 1990s.
economy
Up to the present day agriculture plays the biggest role in the economic life of the municipality. The viticulture that was previously operated here was completely given up after the phylloxera crisis . Tobacco and corn are also on the decline - instead, forests, fields and pastures, but also walnut , chestnut and fruit trees dominate the region. Also, foie gras and truffles are among the best regional cuisine. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).
history
The first mention of the place or the church under the name Sancta Mundana can be found in the 11th century. Since the end of the Middle Ages, the place has been closely linked to the Fénelon family, who were originally vassals of the Vice Counts of Turenne . During the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) the place and castle were temporarily occupied by the English.
Attractions
- The parish church of Sainte-Mondane was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Century, of which only the apse and possibly the fortified-looking crossing tower have survived. In the 17th century, the north side of the nave was opened and a side aisle was added. The entrance portal was moved to the south side in the 19th century.
- The Château de Fénelon, only about 200 meters north of the village, with its mighty round towers dates back in part to the end of the Middle Ages. After the end of the Hundred Years War, the two residential wings ( corps de logis ) with their cross-storey windows were added. Parts of the former farm buildings - including a pigeon house ( pigeonnier ) - have been preserved near the castle ( 44 ° 50 ′ 37.3 ″ N , 1 ° 21 ′ 6.1 ″ E ). The building complex has been recognized as a Monument historique since 1927 (in parts only since 1962) .
Personalities
- François Fénelon (1651–1715) was a cardinal, writer and tutor to the grandson of Louis XIV.
