Châtres ( Occitan En Chastre ) is a place and several hamlets (hamlets) existing and farmsteads community with 194 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the southern French department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .
location
Châtres is located on a hill a good 54 km (driving distance) east of Périgueux or a good 40 km west of Brive-la-Gaillarde in the historical province of Périgord at an altitude of about 310 m above sea level. d. The climate is temperate and is influenced equally by the Atlantic Ocean and the mountains of the Massif Central .

The continuous population decline since the second half of the 19th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture as well as the associated loss of jobs.
economy
The place and its surroundings were dominated by agriculture for centuries; Most of the people lived on the produce of their fields and gardens as self-sufficient ; livestock and viticulture were also practiced. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers of all kinds have settled in the village. Since the 1960s tourism has played a not insignificant role in the economic life of the municipality in the form of renting out holiday homes ( gîtes ) .
history
In 1077 the modern town was one of the nearby Virgin Mary consecrated Augustinian - Abbey ( Notre-Dame de Châtres ) by the then Count of Perigord founded. This, like a nearby castle (château), was destroyed during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). Rebuilt in parts, it was in a deplorable condition in 1712; one traveler reports that there is neither a church nor monks. In 1791 the walls were sold and demolished.
Attractions
The tower of the parish church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité , built in the 19th century in neo-Romanesque style on the site of the demolished Saint-Nicolas chapel, dominates the townscape. A statue of the Mother of God is in the upper part of the facade.
