In the 19th century the population of the municipality was mostly between 900 and 1,300 people. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture led to a continuous population decline, which led to a low population in the 1950s to 1970s.

economy

Up to the present day agriculture plays the biggest role in the economic life of the municipality. However, the viticulture practiced here was completely given up after the phylloxera crisis . Tobacco and corn are also on the decline - instead, forests, fields and pastures, but also walnut , chestnut and fruit trees dominate the region. Also, foie gras and truffles are among the best regional cuisine. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

The origins of the place go back to the Roman or Gallo-Roman epoch. A Romanesque church is mentioned in a document in 1143 and given to the Abbey of La Sauve-Majeure by the Bishop of Périgueux in 1199 ; however, it was destroyed in the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). The Gothic successor building was a victim of the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) in the 16th century ; only the lower part of the facade including the portal and some wall segments were preserved.

  • The parish church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens ( Saint Peter in Chains ) was repaired at the beginning of the 17th century; the bell tower seems to have been erected in the 19th century. Just like the exterior, the nave is simple and largely unadorned.
  • The baroque castle dates from the 18th century and belonged for a long time to the Verrie de Siorac family , who bore the title of Count Comte de Vivans . The unusual building is dominated by the two three-story side pavilions with their high, windowless hipped roofs ; the corps de logis in between , on the other hand, only has two floors and looks almost squat.
  • The eleven-arch road bridge over the Dordogne was inaugurated in 1857 and renewed in 1885 after flood damage.
