In the 19th century the place had mostly between 300 and 450 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture have led to a significant population decline since then, but this has turned into slight growth again since the 1960s due to the increasing tourism in the region.
economy
Up to the present day agriculture plays the biggest role in the economic life of the community: The viticulture that was formerly also practiced here was, however, completely abandoned after the phylloxera crisis; Tobacco and maize are also on the decline - instead, fields and pastures, but also walnuts , chestnuts and fruit trees dominate the region. Foie gras and truffles are also regional products. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).
history
The Château de Berbiguières was an outpost of Castelnaud in the Middle Ages ; the place developed at his feet, but was affected in the course of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453).
Attractions
- The Saint-Denys church is a single-nave building from the 18th century with a contemporary portal and a bell gable rising above it . Mighty corner pillars stabilize the facade and the side walls.
- The Château de Berbiguières in its current form dates mostly from the 16th and 17th centuries, but changes were made even in the early 20th century. It is privately owned and was recognized as a Monument historique in 1948 .
- An iron bridge ( Pont du Garrit ) constructed in the style of Gustave Eiffel between 1892 and 1894 crosses the Dordogne in the direction of Saint-Cyprien . It was supposed to be dismantled by the German occupation troops in World War II and taken to Normandy, which was ultimately prevented by counter-activities by the Resistance . Today it serves as a pedestrian bridge.
