The continuous population decline since the second half of the 19th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture as well as the associated loss of jobs.
economy
For centuries, the residents of the community lived on the produce of their fields and gardens, self-sufficient ; In addition, cattle breeding, a little viticulture and the planting of chestnuts were carried out. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers settled in the village. Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses have been used as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .
history
It is unclear whether the place was affected during the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) or during the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598). However, the fortified church suggests a dangerous situation.
Attractions
- The village square and the adjoining streets with their old houses are extremely worth seeing.
- The origin of the parish church of Saint-Matthieu goes back at least to the 12th century. The core of the building is a former watchtower (tour de guet) with exceptionally thick walls made of only slightly hewn rubble stones ; The flat-closing apse with three loopholes -like windows was integrated into this. In the 13th century the high, but almost windowless nave was added. The unadorned facade was given a portal in the style of the Renaissance or early Baroque in the 17th century . The unusual church building was added to the list of Monuments historiques in 1951.
- Very close there is a dovecote (pigeonnier) .
- A medieval-looking market and assembly hall (hall) resting on wooden supports stands on the outskirts; it was only built in 1990.
- Immediately next to it is a fountain with a modern sculpture (La Vie) by the Italian sculptor Giovanni Carosi .
