history

Little is known about the history of the small town. Allegedly a Germanic tribe of the Migration Period (the Besses ) founded the place, which is said to have been sacked by the Saracens in 732 and by the Normans in 880 . In the vicinity of a former castle, today's Château de Besse , the place should have developed gradually. Slag finds in the area indicate early metalworking.
