Thonac is a French commune in the Dordogne department in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . Thonac is in the Périgord . The 252 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) are called Thonacois.

geography

Thonac is located on the banks of the Vézère 17 kilometers northwest of Sarlat-la-Canéda and six kilometers southwest of Montignac on the departmental road D706.

history

In the hamlets of Losse and Maillot , which belong to Thonac , finds from the Old and New Stone Age were discovered during excavations , which prove that the area was already inhabited at that time. Among other things, prehistoric bronze axes were found, which have been classified as Monument historique since 1943 .

Museums

The Museum Le Thot - Espace Cro-Magnon provides information on the construction of Lascaux II , among other things . Lascaux II is a replica of the real Lascaux cave . Attached to the museum is an animal park, in which horses, tarpans , bison and other animals are shown that were depicted in the cave paintings of the Paleolithic.

Buildings

Belcayre Castle was built in the 15th century and remodeled in the 16th and 19th centuries.

The castle Losse dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is right on the Vézère. The palace and gardens were classified as a monument historique in 2007 . In addition, the property is protected as a Site Inscrit (natural and cultural monument).

The Leaning Tower of the Vermondie (Tour penchée de la Vermondie) dates from the Gallo-Roman period (52 BC to 486 AD). It was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques in 1941 and is now in private hands.
