In the 19th century the population of the community was always around 650 to 700. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture led to a population decline in the 1920s to just over 500; after that a slow but steady rise began.
economy
Up to the present day agriculture plays the biggest role in the economic life of the community: The viticulture that was formerly also practiced here was, however, completely abandoned after the phylloxera crisis; Tobacco and corn are also on the decline - instead fields and pastures, but also walnut , chestnut and fruit trees dominate the region. Also, foie gras and truffles are among the best regional cuisine. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).
history
In a church register from the 13th century, the place is mentioned under the name Condac ; the local church and parts of the château originally belonged to one of the most important commander of the Knights Templar in Périgord and - after the order was dissolved in the years 1307 to 1312 - to the Order of St. John , which is still reminiscent of the paw cross in the local coat of arms. Possibly in the run-up to the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) the church was partially destroyed by the Protestant troops of the House of Albret .
Attractions
- The church Nôtre-Dame et Saint-Jean-Baptiste is a simple and, due to the narrow side windows, extremely well-fortified building from the 13th century, which was extensively revised in the 16th and late 19th centuries. The west facade, which has no windows or decorations, is raised by a four-part bell gable ( clocher mur ); the apse from the 19th century with a group of three windows - arranged in a triumphal arch scheme - has a flat end. The church was already classified as a monument historique in 1948 .
- The former commandantur ( commanderie ) of the Templar or St. John was in the area of today's Château de Condat ; only the medieval fortified tower ( donjon ) with a lavatory bay remains . The formerly existing moat ( douve ) was filled in. The rural ensemble has been recognized as a monument historique since 1948 .
- There are some half-timbered houses ( maisons à colombages ) and a beautiful manor house ( manoir ) with a corner tower in the village .
