In the 19th century, the population of the community increased from around 500 to a good 650. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture have since led to a continuous population decline that only came to a standstill in the 1960s.

economy

Up to the present day agriculture plays the biggest role in the economic life of the community: The viticulture that was formerly also practiced here was, however, completely abandoned after the phylloxera crisis; Tobacco and corn are also on the decline - instead, forests, fields and pastures, but also walnut , chestnut and fruit trees dominate the region. Also, foie gras and truffles are among the best regional cuisine. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

Attractions

Tour de Chavagnac
  • The Saint-Pantaléon church is a single-nave medieval building that was partially destroyed in a fire in the 18th century. The church owes its current appearance with a semicircular bell gable and gables over the side chapels to a restoration in the 19th century. The building contains a listed altarpiece from the Renaissance period (16th century) as well as a crucifixion group ( calvaire ) and several carved figures of saints from later times.
  • The Tour de Chavagnac is the remains of a castle from the 15th century, which was partially destroyed in 1569 and burned down almost completely shortly before the outbreak of the French Revolution . The 25 m high multi-storey building with its stone cross-frame windows and lavatory core is a late representative of the medieval keep ( donjons ) and was also used as a watchtower ( tour de guet ) in the following years. The imposing tower was recognized as a Monument historique in 1947 .
  • The local monument to the fallen of World War I was built in 1923.
