Sacerdos of Limoges
Sacerdos of Limoges (French Saint-Sacerdos , Saint-Sardos etc .; * around 680 in Calviac-en-Périgord ; † around 720 in Limoges ) was Bishop of Limoges around the year 700 . According to other sources, his life dates from around the year 500.
Vita
Sacerdos was the son of Christian parents who came from Bordeaux ; his mother was Mundana, also venerated as a saint . In his youth he was brought up, according to tradition, by the Bishop Capuanus of Cahors . At 39, he succeeded a certain Agericus . He died around the year 720; at the sight of his body his old mother regained her sight, but was killed by the Saracens a short time later .
Adoration
His relics and his mother's relics were brought to the Benedictine abbey of Sarlat-la-Canéda in the Carolingian period , and perhaps later , where such intense veneration began that the abbey was renamed. During the Huguenot Wars in 1574, the present cathedral of Sarlat was devastated and all relics scattered; later parts of it were found and reburied. Before and during the French Revolution , however, they were forgotten and were only rediscovered in 1819.
The former cathedral of Sarlat and a few churches in the south of France are dedicated to St. Consecrated sacerdos; two places called Saint-Sardos are also named after him. His feast day is May 5th.
presentation
Medieval representations of the saint are not known. On some modern stained glass he appears in the bishop's robe.
