GDR championships in gymnastics 1980
The GDR gymnastics championships were held for the 31st time in 1980 and took place in Berlin from May 19 to 24 . The venue was the Dynamo sports hall in the Hohenschönhausen sports forum . In the all-around competition, Roland Brückner and Regina Grabolle , both from SC Dynamo Berlin , defended their titles from the previous year. For Brückner it was already his fifth title in a row and thus drew level with Klaus Köste , who made it from 1968 to 1972. In the apparatus finals, another six out of ten possible titles went to the gymnasts from SC Dynamo Berlin, which also made them the most successful team in these championships.

With record scores in the GDR championships of 56.95 points in the compulsory program and 56.90 points in the freestyle, defending champion Roland Brückner was clearly ahead of his club mate Lutz Hoffmann before the final all -around final . In the final, Brückner scored another 56.90 points, winning his fifth title in a row.

After defending his title in jumping, all-around champion Roland Brückner won on the ground and on the rings. After winning the rings, he has now won a title at GDR championships on all machines. In the three remaining finals, the 24-year-old Brückner secured second place. Michael Nikolay on pommel horse and Ralf-Peter Hemmann on parallel bars each won their third title in a row on their machines. Jürgen Nikolay secured his first championship title on the horizontal bar .
